Where Are F1 Teams Based?

Throughout the history of Formula 1, there have been over 136 teams participating in the sport. In 2023, only 10 are left remaining, and some have changed their names over the years.

In this article, I’ll go over all current F1 teams and explain where they’re located, how long they’ve been there, and then some.

  • Current Headquarters – Bradbourne Drive, Tilbrook, Milton Keynes, MK7 8BJ, UK
  • Current Team Principal – Christian Horner
  • Founder(s) – Dietrich Mateschitz
  • First F1 Entry – 2005 Australian Grand Prix
  • Drivers’ Championships – 7 (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2021, 2022, 2023)
  • Constructors’ Championships – 6 (2010, 2011, 2012, 2023, 2022, 2023)

Red Bull Racing, also known as Oracle Red Bull Racing or RBR, is based in the United Kingdom, in the city of Milton Keynes.

More specifically, you can find them on Bradbourne Drive, Tilbrook, Milton Keynes, at MK7 8BJ.

They formed Red Bull Powertrains there during the 2022 season, as part of a deal with Honda to use their engines until the 2024 season.

Both the Red Bull Powertrains and the Red Bull Racing companies are located in the same area.

The team was formed in 2005 from the Jaguar team after Red Bull bought the F1 team for $1.

Over the years, they’ve won both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championship titles in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2022, and 2023.

They’ve also engaged in multiple partnerships with car manufacturers like Ford (2005), Ferrari (2006), Renault (2007-2015), TAG Heuer (2016-2018), Honda (2019-2021), and their own Red Bull Powertrains from 2022 onward.

Their current car, the RB19, is said to be one of the most performant race cars in Formula 1 history, winning around 19 out of 20 races throughout the 2023 season.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team

  • Current Headquarters – Operations Centre, Brackley, Northamptonshire, NN13 7BD, UK
  • Current Team Principal – Toto Wolff
  • Founder(s) – Toto Wolff
  • First F1 Entry – 1954 French Grand Prix
  • Drivers’ Championships – 9 (1954, 1955, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020)
  • Constructors’ Championships – 8 (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021)

Mercedes-Benz debuted in F1 in 1954 during the French Grand Prix but the team’s success was cut short with the 1955 disaster that killed Mercedes driver Pierre Levegh and more than 80 spectators.

The team withdrew from Formula 1 and only returned as an engine supplier in 1994. Only in 2010 did a veritable Mercedes team make its way back to the track after Daimler AG bought a 45.1% stake in Brawn GP.

Now known as Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, the team is based out of Brackley and Brixworth, England. They were previously based in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany (during the 1950s).

Toto Wolff is the Team Principal and CEO of the team, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell as the main racers.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team name has a long history behind it. Before the 2010 season, Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz’s parent company, bought a stake in the Brawn GP F1 team.

They also got a sponsorship deal with Petronas. This led to the formation of the Mercedes GP Petronas Formula One Team.

As for their base in Brixworth, that one came after they bought Ilmor, a British motorsport engineering company. They then renamed the company Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains.

They supplied engines to several teams throughout the years, including Sauber, McLaren, Brawn GP, Force India (who then became Racing Point and then Aston Martin F1), Williams, Lotus, and Manor.

  • Founder(s) – Enzo Ferrari
  • First F1 Entry – 1950 Monaco Grand Prix
  • Drivers’ Championships – 15 (1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1964, 1975, 1977, 1979, 2000, 2001, 2002, 20023, 2004, 2007)

Ferrari, also known as Scuderia Ferrari S.p.A. or “The Prancing Horse”, is the third-ranked F1 team in 2023.

They’re based out of Maranello, the Province of Modena, Italy, and their team principal is Frédéric Vasseur.

The location of the team’s headquarters has deep historical significance, too. Enzo Ferrari, the founder of Ferrari, moved to Maranello in 1943, where he built the 12-cylinder, 1.5 L Tipo 125. The location was bombed in the First World War in 1944 and 1945 but it survived.

The car first competed in Formula 1 during the 1948 Italian Grand Prix and achieved its first win during the Circuito di Garda.

Before Maranello, the team had its HQ in Modena. To this day, both Ferrari’s road car factory and the Scuderia Ferrari remain at Maranello.

The team’s current drivers are Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr., two of the best-ranked F1 drivers in 2023.

Ferrari is also the oldest and one of the most prestigious F1 teams, having competed in every F1 season since the sport’s inception in 1950.

They’ve also produced their own Formula 1 engines and were the main suppliers of other teams, including Minardi (1991), Scuderia Italia (1992-1993), Sauber (1997-2005 & 2010-2025), Prost (2001), Red Bull Racing (2006), Spyker (2007, Scuderia Toro Rosso (2007-2013, 2016), Force India (2008), Marussia Team (2014-2015), and Haas F1 Team & Alfa Romeo Racing in 2023.

  • Constructors’ Championships – 8 (1974, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1998)

McLaren Racing Limited is the official name of the McLaren F1 team, and they’re based in Surrey, England.

They’re the second-oldest F1 team and also the second most-successful F1 team after Ferrari, having won 183 races, 8 Constructors’ Championships, and 12 Drivers’ Championships.

Over the years, many F1 legends drove for McLaren, including Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda, and Alain Prost. Even the current 7-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton drove for McLaren between 2007 and 2012, during which he won his first-ever F1 title.

The team’s current drivers are Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and their current engine is the Mercedes F1 M14 E Performance.

The McLaren F1 team has used many engines throughout their career, including Ford-Cosworth DFV engines, TAG-Porsche and Honda engines, Mercedes engines, Honda engines again, Renault engines, and Mercedes again from 2021 until today.

They’re ranked 5th in 2023, with 282 points, behind only the Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull Racing teams.

  • Current Team Principal – Mike Krack
  • Founder(s) – Lawrence S. Stroll
  • First F1 Entry – 1959 Dutch Grand Prix
  • Drivers’ Championships – 0
  • Constructors’ Championships – 0

The Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 Team is currently based in Silverstone, England, home to the popular Silverstone circuit.

Historically, there were two Aston Martin F1 teams. The first debuted during the 1959 season and was disbanded after the 1960 season because of poor performance.

The current Aston Martin team was founded by Lawrence S. Stroll in 2021 after getting a 16.7% stake in the Aston Martin company.

He rebranded the Racing Point F1 Team into the current Aston Martin F1 team, and Cognizant became the official sponsor as of January 2021.

The Aston Martin AMR21 was officially revealed as the team’s official F1 racing car in March 2021, and Mercedes became their power unit supplier.

An Aston Martin team hadn’t participated in Formula 1 for 61 years, so its return to the racing track was a highly-expected event.

Starting in 2026, the team will begin a works partnership with Honda, who will supply them with power units specifically designed for their chassis.

  • Drivers’ Championships – 0
  • Constructors’ Championships – 0

The Alpine F1 team has a long and complicated history. It went through many hands before becoming the current team we see in 2023.

Initially, it was the Toleman F1 team, then it became the Benetton F1 Team, and then in 2000, Renault bought it and renamed it to the Renault F1 team.

In 2011, the team changed names again to Lotus Renault GP, then to Lotus F1 Team from 2012 to 2015.

In 2015, Renault renamed it to Renault Sports Formula One team, and in September 2020, they decided to rename it to Alpine F1 Team.

This was a move intended to promote the Alpine brand, which had been working alongside Renault since 1968.

The team has two HQs, one in Enstone which houses the chassis and managerial staff, and one in Viry-Châtillon, France, which holds the engine side of the team.

They acquired the Enstone HQ before the 1992 season, and they’ve been there ever since.

Their current drivers are Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, both of which are French drivers driving for a French team.

  • Founder(s) – Frank Williams and Patrick Head
  • First F1 Entry – 1977 Spanish Grand Prix
  • Drivers’ Championships – 7 (1980, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997)
  • Constructors’ Championships – 9 (1980, 1981, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997)

Williams Racing was originally called Frank Williams Racing Cars and was founded in 1977 by Frank Williams.

Then, it was renamed to Walter Wolf Racing after a Canadian millionaire named Walter Wolf bought the team.

Frank Williams left the Water Wolf Racing team and moved to Didcot to try and rebuild the original Williams team. He named it Williams Grand Prix Engineering, recruited Patrick head, and began a successful long-standing partnership.

Eventually, the team found a sponsor in Martini in 2014 but due to alcohol advertising restrictions in Bahrain, Russia, and Abu Dhabi, the team came to be known simply as Williams Racing.

Their current drivers are Logan Sargeant and Alexander Albon. Over the years, multiple World Champions drove for Williams, including Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, Ayrton Senna, and Nico Rosberg.

The team operates out of Grove, Oxfordshire, UK, which also houses the Williams Heritage, the Williams Experience Centre, and the WAE Technologies.

Over the years, they’ve used engines from Ford, Honda, Judd, Renault, Mecachrome, Supertec, BMW, Cosworth, Toyota, and finally Mercedes.

  • Drivers’ Championships – 0
  • Constructors’ Championships – 0

Scuderia AlphaTauri is the newest moniker for Scuderia Toro Rosso, one of the two Formula 1 constructors owned by Red Bull. The other is Red Bull Racing.

Toro Rosso asked to change its name before the 2020 Season to AlphaTauri in an attempt to promote their parent company’s AlphaTauri fashion brand.

The Toro Rosso moniker had been active for 14 years before being retired in December 1st, 2019.

The team’s origins go back to 1958, when it first competed in F1 under the Minardi name. Red Bull GmbH bought the team in 2006 and named it Toro Rosso, making it the junior team to Red Bull Racing.

However, both the team principal, Franz Tost, and the director, Helmut Marko, claim that Scuderia AlphaTauri is now a sister team to Red Bull Racing.

The current drivers for Scuderia AlphaTauri are Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda. Initially, Nyck De Vries was supposed to be Tsunoda’s teammate but the team released De Vries before the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Instead, they got Daniel Ricciardo as a replacement from the Red Bull Racing team. Ricciardo was then replaced by Liam Lawson due to a hand injury.

Eventually, Ricciardo returned to the track, with Lawson remaining the reserve driver for the team.

So far, Scuderia AlphaTauri has won one race, reached the podium 2 times, and gathered 305 points.

Helmut Marko claims that the team will be rebranded in 2024 when they’ll have a new sponsor!

Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake

  • Current Team Principal – Alessandro Alunni Bravi
  • Founder(s) – Peter Sauber
  • First F1 Entry – 1950 British Grand Prix
  • Drivers’ Championships – 2 (1950, 1951)
  • Constructors’ Championships – 0

The Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake is the newest name of the Sauber F1 Team. The Sauber Group announced a partnership with Alfa Romeo in 2019, changing the team’s name to Alfa Romeo Racing.

They then went through three more name changes – Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen in 2020 and 2021, Alfa Romeo F1 Team Orlen in 2022, and Alfa Romeo Team Stake in 2023.

However, Alfa Romeo will exit the Formula One scene at the end of 2023 and will end their partnership with Sauber.

Sauber will begin a new partnership with Audi in 2026, so the team’s name will go through another change.

Currently, the two Alfa Romeo drivers are Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas. They didn’t have too much success this season, as they’re ranked second-to-last.

The Alfa Romeo F1 team did meet with success in 1950 and 1951 when Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio won their World Drivers’ Championships driving for the team.

Then, Alfa Romeo withdrew its team from Formula 1 and returned as a constructor in 1979 until 1985.

Finally, it partnered with Sauber for the 2019-2023 seasons under a Swiss racing license. After 2023, Alfa Romeo will once again disappear from F1.

As for the Sauber F1 team, which will remain the same after the Alfa Romeo partnership ends, it did not win any Drivers’ or Constructors’ championships throughout its racing history.

Haas F1 Team

  • Current Team Principal – Guenther Steiner
  • Founder(s) – Gene Haas
  • First F1 Entry – 2016 Australian Grand Prix
  • Drivers’ Championships – 0
  • Constructors’ Championships – 0

Haas Formula LLC, currently known as MoneyGram Haas F1 team, was established by Gene Haas, the co-owner of the NASCAR Cup Series team, in 2014.

The team first participated in Formula 1 during the 2016 Australian Grand Prix and so far, they haven’t won any races or reached the podium.

Their current drivers are Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg who had limited success for this season. The same lineup will continue for 2024, though.

The Haas F1 Team was formed after Gene Haas purchased the Banbury headquarters of the disbanded Marussia F1 team in 2014.

They then established a long-term relationship with Ferrari and went on to participate in the 2016 Australian Grand Prix with drivers Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutiérrez.

Grosjean scored 8 points for the team, which made Haas F1 the first American constructor to win any points in its F1 debut race, and also the first overall constructor since Toyota Racing in 2002 to do this.

They had limited success during the 2016-2020 seasons but they went through financial difficulties in the 2021 season.

As for the 2023 season, the team got Nico Hülkenberg to partner up with Kevin Magnussen, and the latter achieved the team’s best qualifying position in the entire season, coming second in a wet qualifying session.

Overall, though, the Haas F1 Team is ranked tenth during the 2023 season, with only 12 points.

Conclusion

This year’s F1 teams are the culmination of 73 years of Formula 1 experience and advancements.

Seven out of ten teams are based in the UK, which shows the country’s strong ties to Formula 1.

Moreover, Red Bull Racing is the current undisputed leader in the race team rankings but the other teams shouldn’t be ignored either.

Ferrari is the only team in the 2023 roster who participated in Formula 1 since the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix.

The current teams should remain on the track for the foreseeable future, even though the sponsors will come and go.
